Greeley Tribune Takes Home CAPER Awards

The Greeley Tribune placed first for General Excellence in the annual Colorado Associated Press Editors and Reporters contest.  Other first place winners were Sherrie Peif, Beat Reporting; Sharon Dunn, Business Story; Dan England, Environmental Story, News column and Feature Story; Jim Rydbom, General News Photo and Photo Illustration; and Sam Mustari, Sports Column.  Eric Bellamy, Jim Rydbom and the Greeley Tribune also won Best of Show for the photo essay, "Delaney's Life."  The Tribune also took home 28 awards from the Colorado Press Association newspaper contest, including general excellence awards for advertising and editorial content in its circulation category.

Weld County Accounting Earns Achievement for Excellence Award

The accounting department for Weld County government was awarded the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting from the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada.  This award marks the 30th year the department has received this honor.

Outstanding Family Medicine Award Given

Doctors Sarah DeMoor and Lisa Young have received the F. William Barrows Award for Outstanding Family Medicine Resident from the Colorado Academy of Family Physicians.  Both serve as administrative co-chief residents at North Colorado Family Medicine in Greeley.

Humphries Joins Colorado Tennis Hall of Fame

Scott Humphries, born and raised in Greeley, has been inducted into the Colorado Tennis Hall of Fame.  Scott is considered one of Colorado's best-ever tennis players receiving the number 1 ranking in the state when he was just 12 years old.  In 1994, he became the first American in over 12 years to claim the Boys Wimbledon Championship.  He then moved on to work with number 1 ranked women's player Jelena Jankovic.

Xcel Energy Achievement Award Goes to City

Greeley's Water Pollution Control Facility has received the Xcel Energy Achievement Award for being the largest successful 2011 participant in their Customer Efficiency Program.  The City installed new high-speed turbo blowers at the plant which significantly reduces electrical consumption and greenhouse gases.  The City received a $121,000 rebate from Xcel Energy.

Local Writer Receives Grand Master Award

Congratulations to local writer Connie Willis for being honored with the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writer of America Damon Knight Memorial Grand Master Award.  The award recognizes lifetime achievement in science fiction or fantasy and will be awarded during the 2012 Nebula Awards in May.  Connie's works have earned numerous awards including 7 Nebula awards, 11 Hugo awards and 5 Locus awards.

Junior Roller Derby Team Goes Viral

An inspiring video about Junior Roller Derby was recently made viral by "HDNet Movies" showing Greeley's own Slaughterhouse Derby Girls' "Butcher Babes", a junior league for girls under 18 who want to get into the sport of roller derby.  The video highlights the 30 plus skaters ranging in ages from 7-17.  Several talk about how they got into derbying and what it has done for their self-esteem.

2011

City Attorney Named Outstanding in Colorado

Greeley City Attorney, Rick Brady, has been named the 2011 Outstanding Colorado City Attorney by the Metro City Attorney's Association and Colorado Municipal League.  Rick has served in the Greeley City Attorney's office since 1988 and is well known for his expertise in oil and gas matters, long time mentoring of City Attorneys across the state, and his dedicated service to community efforts such as the Guadalupe Shelter and the Cache la Poudre River National Heritage Area.

Santa Cops Make the Season Bright

Santa and his elves are at it again!  The 2011 Santa Cops project is providing well over 3600 presents to children in Greeley, serving more than 1,150 families - a 15% increase from last year.  Referrals come from throughout the community and multitudes of toys and presents are donated by businesses and individuals for this effort.  Numerous volunteers from Greeley assist every year demonstrating the caring and generous nature of residents.

Emergency Service PIO of the Year

Congratulations to Weld County government's information specialist and special projects manager, Jennifer Finch, who was named the public information officer of the year by the Emergency Services Public Information Officers Association of Colorado.

Clerk of the Year Goes to Greeley's Holder

Greeley City Clerk Betsy Holder has been recognized as Clerk of the Year by the Colorado Municipal Clerk's Association.  Ms. Holder earned the recognition through multiple accomplishments, for example her leadership role in CMCA's Train the Trainer Program, development of the Colorado Municipal Records Retention Schedule and CMCA's Managing Municipal Records in Colorado publication; serving as chair of the CMCA Records Management Committee and a Task Force leader.  Ms. Holder also serves on the Weld County 19th Judicial Review Board and on CMCA's Records Management Committee.  Ms. Holder's collaborations with other jurisdictions and the Stateof Colorado have lead to improvements in records management throughout the state.  Along with the long list of professional contributions to CMCA and its member cities, she is exemplary in accomplishing her current responsibilities as Greeley's City Clerk.

Outreach Project Honored for Excellence

The Consumers United Association has awarded the Faith Community Service Fund of Greeley the "Right on the Money" award and $3,000 for providing excellent financial education to Greeley residents.  The award will be used for the Getting Ahead program, which helps participants get on the path of self-sufficiency by learning about personal finance, behavior changes and improved money management.

City's Real or Rumor Show Earns National Award

Congratulations to our GTV8 staff and to the hosts of the 'Real or Rumor' show, Cheryl Aragon and Aimee Freeland, for earning a national award from the City-County Communications & Marketing Association.  Real or Rumor was selected for recognition from among 101 video entries and 18 entries in the talk show and news programming category.  Judges' comments included "Great concept!  Greeley nailed it!  The talent is lively and engaging.  The entire judging team loved this entry!"

Local Residents Earns Historic Preservation Medal

Greeley resident Chris Ruth has been honored by the Centennial Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution with the 2011 National Historic Preservation Medal.  She received the award for her efforts to map and record data on grave markers in cemeteries in Weld County, as well as her efforts to erect historical markers, and locate and repair existing historical markers.  In 2004, ruth and two other members of the Centennial State Chapter undertook a digital photography project to record all of the markers and monuments in Weld's cemeteries.  The images were placed online where they are available to researchers and genealogists around the world.  When Lakeside Cemetery in Windsor was devastated by a tornado, the digital images helped in the post-tornado reconstruction work.

Greeley Attorney Reappointed to Lawyers Association

Greeley City Attorney Rick Brady has been reappointed as Regional Vice President for the International Municipal Lawyers Association which represents City Attorneys across the U.S.  He will represent the 10th Circuit which includes Colorado, Utah and Wyoming.  This will be his 3rd term as Regional vice President.  Rick has served for the past 22 years as Greeley City Attorney.

Museum Receives Coveted Award

The Greeley History Museum has been chosen to receive the Miles Bancroft History Award from History Colorado for the Museum staff's collaborative exhibit called Ghost Towns and Boom Towns and the subsequent book, Weld County Towns: The First 150 Years.

USA Triathlon Magazine Highlights Greeley

Greeley was recently highlighted in USA Triathlon Magazine.  With one of the most competitive groups of young athletes in the country, the Rocky Mountain Region decided it was time to create a Regional Junior Championship event.  The Greeley Triathlon was proud to host the 2011 USA Triathlon Rocky Mountain Region Junior Championship.  The race was organized by members of the Greeley Triathlon Club with help from the Greeley Police Officer's Association, Greeley Central High School athletes and coaches, and numerous other volunteers.  The event was 100 percent volunteer driven with all race proceeds being donated to local youth groups and agencies.  The next Greeley Triathlon is scheduled for June 10, 2012.

Island Grove is Going to the Dogs

Greeley's Island Grove Park has received kudos in the September edition of Dog News for the facilities' and staff's role in hosting the recent Affenpinscher Club of America National Specialty dog show.  The writer commented, "Island Grove Park is . . . a mass of spacious picturesque lawns, ancient trees, and excellent event centers."

Finance Director Appointed by Governor

Congratulations to the City of Greeley's Finance Director, Tim Nash, who has been appointed by Governor John Hickenlooper to serve on the Fire and Police Pension Association Board of Directors as a representative for Colorado municipalities.  The Board administers a statewide pension plan for full-time paid police officers and firefighters.

East Africa Community Center Considered Everyday Heros.

Colette West and Asad Abdi from the East African Community Center in Greeley received the Denver Channel 7 "Everyday Hero" award from Mitch Jelniker.  The community center, located at the former Cameron Elementary School, works with Greeley's East African community to improve their quality of life through programs on education, health, finances, cultural integration and civil and human rights that lead to self-sufficiency and self-reliance.

Another Award for Local Sci-Fi Author

Greeley author connie Willis has won another award for her two-volume science fiction work "Black/All Clear."  Connie has won the Hugo award for Best Novel for her story of time travel and the London Blitz during World War II.  She has now won 12 Nebulas and Hugos, more than any other science fiction writer.

Greeley Police Receive State Acreditation

The Colorado Association of Chiefs of Police has granted the Greeley Police Department State-Accredited status.  This accreditation certifies that the Department has successfully met more than 100 standards of professional excellence.  Of the more than 200 local law enforcement agencies in Colorado, fewer than forty have attained this recognition.  Congratulations to the Chief and all our Police personnel.

Colorado Governor Honors City Youth Enrichment Program

On August 10 at the Governor's Mansion in Denver, Greeley's Youth Enrichment Division was awarded the Governor's Summer Job Hunt Award.  City staff earned the award for Greeley's Teen Job Fair and Summer Teen Employment Program. This is the 5th time that the Youth Enrichment Division has received the award.

Weld County Leads the State in Employment

Employment rose in all nine large counties in Colorado from December 2009 to December 2010 according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.  Weld County led the state with a 2.9 percent gain and is ranked 11th among the 326 large counties in the nation.  Large counties are defined as those with employment of 75,000 or more as measured by 2009 annual average employment.  In addition, Weld County's wages grew 6.2% which was 9th in the country and well above the national average of 3% and the state's average of 3.7%.

City Water Pollution Facility Tops in Performance

The City of Greeley's Water Pollution control Facility has earned the 2011 Plant Performance Merit Award presented by the Rocky Mountain Water Environment Association.  One award is presented annually to a wastewater plant in the Colorado, Wyoming and New Mexico region recognizing outstanding efforts in plant operations, maintenance and public relations due to the concerted efforts of all personnel associated with plant management and operations.  This is the 4th time Greeley WPCF staff have received this prestigious award, winning previously in 2005, 1999, and 1992.

Regional Forensic Lab Given Award for Collaboration

The Northern Colorado Regional forensic Lab has been awarded the 2011 August Vollmer Excellence in Forensic Science Award in the collaboration category.  The Vollmer Award honors the proactive, innovative use of forensic technologies by law enforcement.  The award will be presented at the International Association of Chiefs of Police Annual conference in October.  The Regional Forensic Lab is a partnership that includes the City of Greeley, four other law enforcement jurisdictions and two District Attorney's offices who work cooperatively to improve the scope, efficiency, effectiveness, and value of forensic services in Northern Colorado.

Senator Udall Promotes New Initiative

On June 2, Senator Mark Udall visited Greeley to promote the Nationa Kids to Parks Initiative.  He recognized Greeley's Leisure Services staff and their youth programs that encourage good physical health for local youth.

Author Receives Nebula Award

Greeley author Connie Willis has received her 8th Nebula award from the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America.  The SFFWA's 1,500 members awarded best novel honors to her epic two-volume work "Blackout/All Clear".  Connie has collected more Nebulas (the Oscars of science fiction) and Hugos (People's Choice) awards than any other science fiction writer, a total of 11.

Weld County Receives Obesity Grant

The Weld County Department of Public Health and Environment has received a $186,000 grant from the Colorado Health Foundation to support local programming to prevent obesity, while educating and encouraging residents of Weld County to live healthier lives.  The grant supports the Healthy Weld 2020 program, which takes the leading role of obesity prevention in the county by creating healthy environments where residents live, work, learn and play.  Examples of efforts in Greeley include healthy food and drink options at Lozano's Market and the 18th Street Discounty Grocery as well as the community garden project in conjunction with the Boys and Girls Club.

Greeley Philharmonic Named Winner

The Greeley Philharmonic Orchestra was recently named a winner in the Next Generation Indie Book Awards.  The book, "The Greeley Philharmonic Orchestra: A Century of Musical Magic, 1922-2011" was written, shot and designed by a group of volunteers to honor the Philharmonic's 100th season.  The Indie Book Awards program was established by the Independent Book Publishing Professionals Group to recognize and honor the best independently published books of the year.

Greeley Fire Fighters Honored for Accomplishments

Two Greeley Fire Department personnel have been honored for their accomplishments and hard work.  Lieutenant Brian Kuznik was selected by the VFW as the 2010 "Firefighter in Blue" for his outstanding accomplishments.  Besides his regular duties, Brian is the lead instructor for the Emergency Response Diving Program.  Paramedic firefighter Troy Valente received an endorsement from the Journal of Emergency Medicine on his recently published book, "Capnography King fo the ABC's: A Systematic Approach for Paramedics".

Local Attorney Considered Up-and-Coming

Greleey attorney, Jennifer Lynn Peters, has been named one of the top up-and-coming attorneys in the state for 2011 by the Thomson Reuters Legal Division.  Each year, Thomson Reuters undertakes a rigorous multi-phase selection process that includes a statewide survey of lawyers, independent evaluation of candidates by the attorny-led research staff, a peer review of candidates and a good-standing and disciplinary check.

Former West Student A Professional of the Year

Congratulations to Abbie Adams, a 1999 Greeley West High School graduate.  Adams earned the Young Professional of the Year Award and the Young Engineer of the Year Award from EA Engineering, Science, and Technology, Inc.

HP Named Contractor of the Year

Kudos to Hensel Phelps Construction Company of Greeley for being named the 2010 Contractor of the Year by the Associated Builders and Contractors.

KUNC Radio Wins Four CBA Awards

Greeley's KUNC-FM has won four awards in the major market division at the Colorado Broadcasters Association's annual awards.  News staff took 2nd place for best newscast; first and second place in the Best news feature or series category; and first place for Best Single Event news coverage.

Colorado Press Association Awards Tribune

The Greeley Tribune staff took home 27 awards at the 2010 Colorado Press Association newspaper contest, including the general excellence award in its circulation category.  The Tribune also won the sweepstakes award in Editorial and Photo & Design categories.

City Attorney Published for Water Article

Congratulations to Jessica Pault, Assistant City Attorney with the City of Greeley, for her recent article published in the February 2011 issue of "The Colorado Lawyer" entitled 'Section 404 Regulation of Irrigation Ditches in Colorado'.  The article reviews the implications of potential federal regulation of irrigation ditches.

Weld County Attorneys Named Lawyers of the Year

Three Weld County District Attorney's Office prosecutors have been named Lawyers of the Year for 2010 by Law Week Colorado.  Michael Rourke, assistant district attorney; Mat Maillaro, chief deputy district attorney; and Sadie Medrano, deputy district attorney, were honored for their work last summer on the John Sandoval case.

Local Tow Company Wins Award

Shiloh Thomas of Another Towing Co. Inc. of Greeley has received the American Towman Ace Award for achievement in service performance.  Ace Award recipients rank in the top 1 percent of the towing industry's service providers.

CDOT/Greeley Listed Among America's Healthiest Companies

Congratulations to the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) office in Greeley for being listed among America's healthiest companies and winning a Silver Standard Award by the Wellness Councils of America for their comprehensive employee wellness program.  CDOT offices now join NCMC, the City of Greeley, Weld County Government, State Farm and Weld Schools Credit Union as another business in Greeley to receive the award.

Sunrise Health Winner of Excellence Award

Sunrise Community Health has been named the winner of the Large Health Care category at El Pomar Foundation's Awards for Excellence earning the center a $15,000 prize.  Sunrise has provided health care to Greeley and the surrounding areas for more than 35 years.  Working poor families can receive primary and dental care, substance abuse, laboratory and X-ray servcies, case management, pharmacy and health education.

Greeley Historian Now a Hall of Famer

Charles W. "Chuck" Holmes, a Greeley archivist, historian and retired teacher, has been inducted into the Colorado Aviation Hall of Fame.  Chuck has preserved Colorado aviation history through his service to the Colorado Aviation Historical Society and other organizations.  He sponsors an aviation library at a retirement home and has collected more than 2,190 original autographs of aviation pioneers such as Charles Lindbergh and Amelia Earhart.  A teacher for 38 years, Chuck taught for School District 6, as well as at the University of Colorado and University of Northern Colorado.  Chuck was also recognized in 2000 by the OX5 Aviation Pioneers as "National Historian of the Year" and in 2001 was awarded the "Special Recognition Award" by the Colorado Aviation Historical Society.

Island Grove Has Gone to the Dogs

Greeley's Island Grove Park and Park staff were recently lauded in "Dog News" regarding a dog show hosted in Greeley last month.  "Dog News" has been referred to as the "Bible of the Sport", with a staff that includes the most award winning and respected group of informed dog writers assembled in one publication.  Readership spans the globe for those who want to stay abreast of the latest news concerning the purebred dog specifically, and all dogs generally.  "Dog News" is the oldest and largest published weekly in America today.  The author noted the Island Grove facility and staff's dog friendliness and stated, "This seems to be one venue that appreciates the financial benefits to the community of welcoming dog events."

Greeley Emergency Manager Receives FEMA Certificate

Steve Blois, Greeley's Emergency Manager, was recently awarded a Cerfificate of Achievement from FEMA for completing the agency's Advanced Professional Development series.  The certificate reflects training in the areas of disaster preparedness, response, mitigation and recovery.

Celebrating Women Gala Honors Locals

The Friends of A Women's Place honored local residents at their annual Celebrating Women Gala.  Five outstanding women who make our community a better place were honored for outstanding community leadership: Jane Adams for Community Enrichment; Charmaine Coppom for Arts & Community; Ann Lacefield for Community Educator; Rhonda Solis for Community Advocate; and Chalice Springfield for Business and Community Motivator.

Firefighters Remember 9/11

Firefighters from the Union Colony Fire/Rescue Authority were among 343 who climbed the 55 floors of the Qwest Tower in Denver in memory of 9-11 victims.  The firefighters, many in full gear, climbed the stairs twice in honor of the 343 firefighters who were killed at the World Trade Center.  The UCFRA team, which started 7th, was the first to reach the roof.

County Attorneys Named Top Prosecutors

Michael Rourke, Weld County assistant district attorney, and Matt Maillaro, Weld chief deputy district attorney, were recently named Top Prosecutors of the Year by the Colorado District Attorneys Council.

Senior Program Manager Named Outstanding Professional

Sheri Lobmeyer, recreation program manager at the Greeley Senior Activity Center, has been awarded the Marianne Logan Award for Outstanding Professional by the Colorado Association of Senior Centers.  CASC Awards are presented annually to recognize organizations, individuals and volunteers who help older adults live a long, better quality life.

Northern Colorado Women Honord for Contributions

A dozen Northern Colorado women were honored for their contributions to the region during the Northern Colorado Business Report's Women of Distinction recognition event.  Congratulations to Weld School District 6 Winograd principal, Holly Bressler, for being selected.

Former Mayor Receives 4-H Award

Dorothy Zabka of Greeley has been named the State Senate Outstanding 4-H Adult Leader Award winner at the State 4-H conference at Colorado State University.  A former mayor of Greeley, she has been an active leader with the Weld County 4-H program for nearly 55 years.

Greeley is a Great Place to Retire

"Where to Retire" magazine has again listed Greeley on its top 10 list of great places to retire in its July/August edition.  The magazine covers the best retirement regions, towns and master-planned communities.

Channel 4 Denver Highlights Greeley Freight Station Museum

Channel 4 in Denver has featured the Greeley Freight Station Museum on Colorado Getaways, a half hour program  on Colorado outdoors activities, historical places and things to do.

Greeley Agent Earns Allstate Community Award

Congratluations to Sue Helfrich, an Allstate agent in Greeley.  Sue has earned the Agency Hands in the Community Award for her involvement and commitment to teen drivers' safety in Weld County including the DRIVE SMART Weld County Coalition and the Prevent Alcohol and Risk-Related Trauma in Youth program (P.A.R.T.Y.).

Adler Named Insurance Professional

Michelle Adler of Greeley has been named the Insurance Professional of the Year for 2009-2010.  She was honored at the Annual Region VII Conference of the National Association of Insurance Women International.  Michelle will now complete for the national honor to be awarded in June.  She works for State Farm Insurance.

Tribune Earns Awards

The Greeley Tribune netted 15 awards, including six first place awards, at the Colorado Associated Press Editorial and Reporters Association annual awards ceremony.  The Tribune competes in Division I, which encompasses all newspapers in Colorado with a circulation of less than 30,000.  The Tribune also won the Colorado Press Assocation's General Excellence Award.

Greeley Resident on Best Sellers List

Greeley resident and UNC Alumna, Connie Willis' new book "Black Out" hit the New York Times Best Sellers List as of February 12th.  Congratulations to Connie.

Advocate of the Year

Jay Borgman of Greeley has been awarded the Advocate of the Year award from the Mental Health America of Colorado.  Jay received the award for his continuous efforts to ensure that people living with mental health conditions have access to all of the services they need to lead healthy, successful lives.

Lifetime Achievement Award Given

Carl Gerbrandt, a longtime professor at the University of Northern Colorado and director of the Greeley Chorale, has received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Opera Association.

2009

Colorado Pageants at UCCC

The 2010 Miss Colorado USA and Miss Colorado Teen USA Pageants selected Greeley's Union Colony Civic Center for their official preliminary competitions on October 31 and November 1 leading up to the national pageants.

SBDC Counselor Receives Award

Jesse Esparza, counselor at the Greeley/Weld Small Business Development Center, has received the 2009 Counselor of the Year Award from the Colorado SBDC Network.

Tointon Named Downtowner of the Year

Bob Tointon, chairman of the Greeley Downtown Development Authority, has been named the Downtowner of the Year by Downtown Colorado, Inc.  DCI also selected Greeley's Kress Cinema and Lounge as the winner of the Governor's Award for Downtown Excellence in the Colorful Colorado category.

GIS Achievement Award

The City of Greeley GIS team has received a Special Achievement Award from ESRI for the creation of the city's ORIGIN Property Information Map system.  The system was developed to address the mapping needs of City departments and the public.  Greeley was one of 152 organizations selected from more than 300,000 world-wide to be recognized.  Staff who attended the conference paid their own way.

Hornaday Silver Award

Congratulations for Eagle Scout, Mark Chambers, of Greeley who has received the William T. Hornaday Silver Award after completing five Eagle Scout Badge requirements.  The purpose of the award is to challenge Americans to work constructively for wildlife conservation and habitat protection.

Greeley Freedom Riders Take Part In Historical Event

For the second straight presidential inauguration, Greeley's Freedom Riders will represent Colorado during a parade for the swearing in of President-elect Barack Obama.  The Freedom Riders will take eight horses to Washington, D.C. and are there to salute the military, families and others involved in protecting the country.

Greeley Golf Courses Are Golf Digest's Best Places to Play Highland Hills Golf Course has been ranked 4 1/2 stars out of a possible 5 stars in the 2008-2009 edition of Golf Digest's Best Places to Play.  Boomerang Links has received a 4 star rating.  This year's "Best Places to Play" rated more than 150 courses in Colorado and nearly 6,000 in North America.  Boomerang Links and Highland Hills were the only public courses in the area to receive such high ratings.  Another course receiving 4 1/2 stars was the Broadmoor Course in Colorado Springs which just hosted the U.S. Senior Open.  Just goes to show that the golf courses in Greeley really are Great. Greeley Resident Selected Chairman of Judicial Institute

Greeley resident, Robert N. Miller, has been selected as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Colorado Judicial Institute.  The Colorado Judicial Institute, established in 1979, is a nonpartisan citizen's group devoted to the excellence and independence of state courts.  Mr. Miller has a long history in the judicial system.  He was the first full-time Weld County District Attorney from 1973-1981.

Tornado Brings Out the Best in Our Community

The City acknowledges all those who have contributed their time, thoughts, prayers and money to the May 22nd tornado victims.  Greeley staff assisted in a number of ways; however, it is the outpouring of help from neighbors, businesses and others in and around Greeley who have made and continue to make all the difference as families try to recover from the storm damage.

Loftus Makes Greeley Great Everyday

For over 50 years, from seasonal laborer in 1958 to his current position as veteran equipment operator with the Public Works Street Division, Dick Loftus has been a mainstay of service for the City and its citizens.  Dick celebrated 50 years on June 2.  Thanks for making Greeley GREAT!

Economic Development Volunteer of the Year

Greeley resident, Robert Loew, has been named the 2007 Economic Development Volunteer of the Year by the Economic Development Council of Colorado.  He was honored during the council's state conference for his leadership in shaping public policy, task force leadership and membership development.

 

Greeley Police Travel to Afghanistan

Greeley police officer Louie Abuso has headed to Afghanistan to teach U.S. military about bombs.  Louie is regarded as one of the most knowledgeable bomb experts in the nation and will teach military bomb specialists about detecting, defusing and investigating bombs.

UCFRA Salutes Garden Square Preparedness Stephen Blois, Union Colony Fire Rescue’s City of Greeley Emergency manager presented Louise Bates of Greeley’s Garden Square Assisted Living facility, a certificate of achievement for emergency preparedness activities.  September was National Preparedness Month.  Garden Square demonstrated what emergency personnel call “best practices”, that is, recognizable leadership in protecting a special needs population, specifically senior citizens.  This facility serves as a model and inspiration of similar facilities in Greeley and the region.

4-year-old Hero Saves Mom The Greeley Police Department presented a Citizen's Certificate of Merit to 4 year old Ariana Evans in connection with her actions seeking medical assistance for her mother.  Ariana was also a guest on the Today Show on November 1st for her GREAT deed.

 

The Tribune Receives Honors

The National Newspaper Association honored The Tribune for producing the best local news coverage in the nation at its annual convention.  The Tribune placed second in the nation in the daily circulation division.  In addition, the Tribune claimed first-place awards for individual entries in the 2007 National Newspaper Association's Better Newspaper Contest.

 

 

Masonic Lodge Presents Community Awards The Greeley Masonic Occidental Lodge No. 20 AF&AM presented its annual community awards on September 24th.  The year's winners are Norm and Bonnie Dean (pictured), who were given the Lifetime Community Impact Award, and Judy Knapp who was honored with the annual Impact Award.  The awards were started in 1999 to recognize residents who have a significant impact on the community.

 

 

Greeley Transit - Transit of the Year The City of Greeley Transit Services Division was honored by the Colorado Association of Transit Agencies (CASTA) as the Medium-Size Transit Unit of the Year.  Transit Division Superintendent, John Lee, was named the Colorado Transit Employee of the Year....and, driver Laura Henry was recognized by CASTA for her selection as the Colorado Safe Driver of the Year.

 

Greeley-Weld Airport Passes Inspections With Flying Colors

The Greeley-Weld County Airport hit the trifecta as a result of an annual airport safety compliance inspection performed by the FAA.  The airport was recently inspected by both an insurance company risk identification team, and the CDOT Division of Aeronautics.  In both cases, the airport passed with flying colors.  In fact, the insurance risk identification team noted that they had never performed an airport inspection in which they left making no recommendations for improvements to reduce the airports risk.  The subsequent safety inspection performed by the State, identified no improvements needed, and that the airport was in great shape.

When the FAA conducted its own annual compliance inspection, zero deficiencies were discovered, and the FAA representative noted the good condition of the airport.  The representative also noted how the aesthetic appearance of the airport overall has improved in recent years.

 

Greeley Resident Chosen As Ms. Wheelchair Colorado Melissa Burroughs of Greeley has been named Ms. Wheelchair Colorado.  She is currently a member of the Commission on Disabilities.

Former West Student Wins National Triathlon Former Greeley West High School athlete, Leah Larson, was named national champion at the USA Triathlon 20-24 Age Group Nationals held June 30. The race qualified her for the September 2007 World Championships in Frankfurt, Germany where she placed second overall in a field of over 600 women. Leah also finished first among women at the Greeley Race for the Cure event. Leah is a two-time All-American triatlete and carries a 4.0 gpa while majoring in finance and economics.

UCFRA Recruits Graduate from Academy Four new Union Colony Fire Rescue recruits recently graduated from the Front Range Fire Consortium Fire Academy - one of the premier professional fire academies in the United States. The recruits finished in the top four spots academically overall out of 23 recruits in the class. Congratulations to Bradyn Thomas, Randall Sparkman, Dominic Tatti and Jerod Kilber.

UCFRA Coordinator Appointed to National Committee Union Colony Fire Rescue Authority’s Emergency Medical Coordinator, Mary Mast, has been appointed to the American Heart Association’s National Committee on Emergency Cardiovascular Program Administration. The committee will be tasked with rewriting and updating the current Program Administration Manual that is used by American Heart Association training programs nation-wide. This national committee appointment will last for two years. Mary Mast was selected out of 30 applicants from throughout the U.S.

2007 Stampede Marshal Announced Wes Sargent (pictured here with his wife Trudy) has been named the 2007 Stampede Grand Marshal.

Local Bank Featured in Fortune Magazine Larry Seastrom, President/CEO of New Frontier Bank in Greeley, was featured in the May 14th edition of Fortune Magazine. The article covered local banks that are producing returns that make the multinationals envious.

KUNC Brings Home Broadcasters' Awards The Colorado Broadcasters Association has recognized KUNC's Brian Larson and Nancy Greenleese based on their news reporting in 2006. Larson was awarded a first place in the Best single Event News category. Greenleese dominated the Best Feature Reporting category.

Huey-091 Memorial Calls Greeley Home America’s Huey-091 helicopter memorial was dedicated on February 17th at Bittersweet Park. The Weld County Vietnam Memorial Committee has worked to add the monument since the Huey visited in 2004. The Huey-091 was used during the Vietnam war and withstood several enemy attacks. The helicopter is now at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History.

Greeley Police Department Receives IACP Award The Greeley Police Department was highlighted in the January 2007 "The Police Chief" magazine for receiving the IACP Community Policing Award. The award recognized the Neighborhood Building Blocks program (NB2)

Greeley History Museum Given Steven H. Hart Award The City of Greeley has won the Steven H. Hart Award for its project to restore and adaptively re-use the 1929 Greeley Tribune Building for the new Greeley History Museum. Recipients of the award are selected by the Board of Directors of the Colorado Historical Society. The award was presented at the annual Colorado Preservation Inc. Conference in Denver.

Greeley FunPlex Winner of Top Public Project Category The Greeley FunPlex was selected winner of the Top Public Project category of the Colorado Construction Gold Hard Hats Award. The awards are sponsored by Colorado Construction Magazine/The Daily Journal newspaper. The project was up against many high profile projects including the Denver Art Museum.

Greeley Icon Inducted in Hall of Great Westerners W.D. Farr is inducted in 2007 to the prestigious Hall of Great Westerners at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City. Other inductees include: Ronald Reagan, Buffalo Bill, Theodore Roosevelt and Dwight Eisenhower.

Potato Brumbaugh's History to Remain at UNC Library After 25 years of operation, the restaurant announced its closing. This unique local history theme using a character from James Michener's novel "Centennial" was a piece of community pride. Two items from the restaurant lobby, a letter from James Michener and the stained glass window featuring Potato Brubaugh, will go to the UNC Michener Library. A second stained glass window was donated to the City of Greeley Museums and will hang in the atrium of the Greeley History Museum.

KUNC Wins Associated Press of Colorado Awards KUNC won five Associated Press of Colorado Awards for coverage in 2005. Nancy Greeleese, reporter, won first place in general reporting and best feature category. She also was second place for use of sound in her story about the new school cup stacking sports. Brian Larson, reporter, won second place in general reporting. Greenleese, Larson and Jim Beers, news director, won second place in the best newscast category for the 6 a.m. "Morning Edition" show.
