Subject: Tree Work Taking Place on 8th Avenue
At the end of January, several trees along the west side of 8th Avenue in the 2000 and 2100 blocks will be trimmed. Other trees, due to age and decline, will be removed. Multiple licensed tree contractors will be involved in this project in an effort to impact traffic in the shortest timeframe possible. Several lanes of both north and southbound traffic in this area will be affected during a two-day period, January 30th and 31st.
Tree trimming and removals become necessary as our street trees age and become hazardous to people and property. We have seen the results of over-mature trees failing, especially during early or late snowstorms, high wind events, and other unusual occurrences.
In 2012, a large tree in this area failed, causing damage to the vehicle of a passing motorist. In order to protect pedestrians, motorists, and property, the City of Greeley Forestry Program is charged with the responsibility of inspecting and mandating necessary maintenance of these trees. While we are sorry to see some of these trees be removed as they reach the end of their lives, we encourage property owners to plant new trees to continue the creation and ongoing benefits of trees as they provide shade, increased property values, aesthetic beauty and a sense of community.
