Over the past five weeks an investigation into an organized group of local individuals has been ongoing with initial arrests coming this past weekend resulting in two search warrants and a substantial recovery of property taken in numerous vehicle trespass cases in the Greeley area.
The Greeley Police Department Special Enforcement Team (S.E.T.) initiated the investigation in the beginning of May when a pattern of victim vehicles was detected and a special investigation began.
The investigation culminated in the arrest of two individuals who were under surveillance when they broke into a vehicle in the Frontier School parking lot while a baseball game was under way at the field. The owners of the victim vehicle reported they were missing a laptop computer, an I-Pod and a purse. Officers continued to watch the suspects and eventually made contact with them in the 3400 block of 34th Street. Property identified as that taken from the vehicle in the parking lot at Frontier School was located inside the suspect vehicle.
Arrested from the vehicle were:
Ernesto J. Castanuela DOB 052081
Kimberly Nunez DOB 101979
Castanuela was booked in on a total of eleven (11) charges and is being held at WCSO jail on $131,000.00 bond. Nunez was booked in on five charges and has a $10,000.00 bond. Additional arrests are anticipated.
Throughout the investigation various units within the Department were involved in the investigation with extensive surveillance and evidence collection. Information was developed that indicates this group may have been active in the Denver metro area as well, and information is being shared with jurisdictions that have had similar cases occur in their jurisdiction. As a result of the two search warrants over one hundred purses, wallets, electronic devices, laptops and cameras were recovered and can be viewed on line at : http://greeleygov.com/police/recovered.aspx
