The Xcel Energy Achievement Awards are presented to energy customers who participate in efficiency programs. Greeley’s Water Pollution Control Facility (WPCF) was the largest successful participant in the Customer Efficiency Demand Side Management Program in 2011. The award will be on display and presented to the City of Greeley at Xcel Energy’s Open House in Denver at the Pepsi Center on February 23, 2012.
The City of Greeley installed high-speed turbo blowers at the WPCF plant. Based on power monitoring Xcel Energy performed last fall, the new blowers are projected to save 2,786,656 kilowatt-hours (kWh) annually. This energy reduction will result in 1,584 tons of carbon dioxide saved. This is a significant reduction in electrical consumption and greenhouse gases, which many believe results in global warming.
In addition to the environmental benefits, this project will save the City of Greeley Water and Sewer Department money. In 2011, the plant used approximately 7,372,821 kWh and the new blowers are projected to save 38% in electricity. The City of Greeley also received a $121,086 rebate from Xcel Energy to install the high efficiency blowers.
