Water Conservation

The City of Greeley is proud to have a long history of water stewardship here in northern Colorado. Since 1907, we’ve provided safe, high-quality water supplies for our residents while ensuring a reliable supply for the future. One of the many ways we’re safeguarding your water supply is through water conservation. In fact, Greeley offers one of the most robust water conservation programs in Colorado.

With just over 13 inches of rainfall per year, Greeley is considered a semi-arid climate. This means local water supplies are scarce and must be used very wisely. To help customers save water indoors as well as outdoors, Greeley provides a wide range of water conservation programs and services that benefit a variety of water users.

Water Efficiency Plan

The City of Greeley’s Water Efficiency Plan is a roadmap of strategic objectives and water conservation programs to ensure future water supplies. The Water Efficiency Plan was approved by the Water and Sewer Board, Planning Commission and City Council in 2022. The main objectives of the plan are to maximize widespread efficiency in all indoor water use, set goals for more resilient landscapes, and educate customers on water use goals. It will provide direction on how to advance water conservation efforts and build citywide capacity to:

  • Create efficiencies and consistencies among policies, plans, projects, and programs
  • Maximize cost-saving opportunities
  • Create goals with clear measurements for success

The Greeley Water Pollution Control Facility (WPCF) is a recipient of a National Association of Clean Water Agencies (NACWA) Peak Performance Platinum 8 Award.

The award recognizes the treatment plant’s excellence and perfect environmental compliance record for the last eight consecutive years.

NACWA Platinum Awards recognize 100 percent compliance with National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permitting over a consecutive five-year period. If 100 percent compliance is maintained beyond the initial award, Platinum Award status is continued. This year, Greeley was awarded Platinum 8 status.

The Greeley Water Pollution Control Facility discharges over 7 million gallons of treated water back into the Cache La Poudre River daily. Compliance with permitted requirements ensures this water is safe for downstream users, aquatic habitats, and the environment. In order to maintain 100 percent compliance, the team at the Water Pollution Control Facility operates and supports various systems that remove pollutants from the wastewater. The water is then sampled and analyzed to ensure treatment performance. It is an all hands on deck effort for every team member at the treatment plant. The WPCF is staffed with a dedicated team of professionals and certified operators who live the City’s values and strive for operational excellence.  The WPCF is proud to have earned this award showcasing their continued commitment and dedication to the health and safety of our community.

Educational classroom tour arrangements may be made depending on the construction schedule and WPCF staff team availability. Please call 970-350-9360 for more information. For more information on Greeley’s Water and Sewer utilities, please visit us at greeleygov.com/water.
