Don’t Flush It!

September 22, 2017
Regional water quality can be affected by what you flush down the toilet.  Below are a few things to be aware of and the proper way to get rid of prescription drugs, chemicals, and more.

Prescription Drug Take-Back Day

Drug-Take-Back-DayDo not flush unused medications down the toilet. Drop off unused or expired medications (no needles or sharps, mercury, oxygen containers, chemotherapy/radioactive substances, pressurized canisters or illicit drugs).  Many substances are difficult to remove at Greeley’s Wastewater Treatment Plant, so disposal at the event is much safer.

Household Hazardous Waste Disposal

Materials such as batteries solvents, paints, pesticides and similar materials should not be disposed of in the trash, in the toilet or down the gutter and into storm drains.  It is open every Tuesday and Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.  The North Weld County Household Waste Facility is located at 1311 N. 17th Avenue.

Can’t Flush This

The only thing you should ever flush down a toilet is human waste (urine and feces) and toilet paper. Here is a list of some of the things to keep out of the toilet.
  • prescription and over the counter drugs
  • disposable diapers
  • tampons and tampon applicators
  • sanitary napkins
  • cotton balls and swabs
  • mini or maxi pads
  • condoms
  • cleaning wipes of any kind, even if it claims to be "flushable"
  • facial tissue
  • bandages and bandage wrappings
  • automotive fluids
  • paint, solvents, sealants and thinners
  • poisons and hazardous waste

Fats, oils, and grease in sewer pipes cause sewer maintenance problems for property owners and the city. Never pour grease down your sink drain and try to use your garbage disposal less often.
