Water Conservation

The City of Greeley is proud to have a long history of water stewardship here in northern Colorado. Since 1907, we’ve provided safe, high-quality water supplies for our residents while ensuring a reliable supply for the future. One of the many ways we’re safeguarding your water supply is through water conservation. In fact, Greeley offers one of the most robust water conservation programs in Colorado.

With just over 13 inches of rainfall per year, Greeley is considered a semi-arid climate. This means local water supplies are scarce and must be used very wisely. To help customers save water indoors as well as outdoors, Greeley provides a wide range of water conservation programs and services that benefit a variety of water users.

Water Efficiency Plan

The City of Greeley’s Water Efficiency Plan is a roadmap of strategic objectives and water conservation programs to ensure future water supplies. The Water Efficiency Plan was approved by the Water and Sewer Board, Planning Commission and City Council in 2022. The main objectives of the plan are to maximize widespread efficiency in all indoor water use, set goals for more resilient landscapes, and educate customers on water use goals. It will provide direction on how to advance water conservation efforts and build citywide capacity to:

  • Create efficiencies and consistencies among policies, plans, projects, and programs
  • Maximize cost-saving opportunities
  • Create goals with clear measurements for success

The last Greeley showerhead exchange of the year will be on Saturday, September 21 from 8 a.m. until noon. The event takes place at the Greeley Farmers’ Market at the Union Pacific Depot, 902 7th Avenue in downtown Greeley.

City of Greeley water customers can bring and exchange old showerheads for new high-efficiency models. To swap their old showerhead for a new high-efficiency model, people should bring a Greeley Water bill with their water account number. Many types of showerheads are available for exchange including handheld models. Customers can choose a showerhead in either white or chrome to match existing bathroom fixtures. You can exchange several showerheads if you have several bathrooms that need an upgrade.

  • The new showerheads are EPA WaterSense labeled.  Products with the WaterSense label are independently certified to use at least 20 percent less water than standard showerheads. These fixtures also perform as well, or better, than conventional models.

  • Most people save about a gallon of water per minute or more with the new showerheads. This simple switch can save an average family about 2,700 gallons of water per year and approximately $70 in annual water and energy costs.
  • Inefficient showerheads not only waste water, but they also consume energy used to heat that water. Every time you take a shower with an efficient showerhead, you save energy. It is equal to the amount of electricity it requires to light a 60-watt light bulb for 8 hours.
  • Property managers or owners of multifamily complexes can also participate in showerhead exchanges.  Please call 970-350-9874 to make arrangements.
