Greeley Gets New Police Chief: Captain Jones Promoted

Mark Jones

Of the three external and two outstanding internal applicants for the position of police chief, I have selected Captain Mark Jones, who is a veteran of more than 30 years of experience with the Greeley police force.  With the retirement of Jerry Garner, Chief Jones now leads a fantastic law enforcement department; one that we were all very proud of under Jerry’s guidance.

Chief Jones started with the GPD in 1984 while still attending the University of Northern Colorado. His education related to Greeley and public safety didn’t stop with his graduation from the police academy that same year or his subsequent completion of the FBI National Academy program.  He has been soaking up experience and training ever since and applying those along the way.  For example, he has been in virtually every assignment possible during his career, including work as a detective, member of the drug task force and as an undercover officer.

Law enforcement in general is an ever evolving and improving art and science.  Clearly, Mark has the professional knowledge and ability to lead a team of professionals that can take care of Greeley as it grows.

He and Captain Savage, our two internal candidates, showed they have a heart for Greeley and its residents.  Now it’s up to Mark to support his staff and collaborate with others wherever possible to keep Greeley safe.

Congratulations, Chief Jones!
