After a long and successful career with the city, Greeley Human Resource Director Sharon McCabe will retire July 1.
McCabe served the City of Greeley for more than 36 years. Throughout her career, she served three city managers and participated in Greeley’s leadership team and guided the city through numerous projects; employment initiatives, laws, and changes while helping the organization progress from a small town of 65,000 with about 500 employees to a mid-size city of 110,000 and nearly 1,000 employees.
“I accepted the position of HR director with the intent to stay in the role for about five years,” McCabe said. “Now, almost three decades later, I look back on my career and marvel at the opportunities I’ve had and the amazing people I have worked with during my time with the city. It has been an honor to serve our community and our employees.”
A steadfast leader for Greeley, McCabe served through strong principles that began by living and leading with honesty and integrity. Her commitment to listening and understanding perspectives and opinions, being authentic and genuine in all situations, involving and engaging employees whenever possible has been instrumental in Greeley’s success.
“I have been blessed to work my entire career with the City of Greeley alongside Sharon McCabe,” said Greeley City Manager Roy Otto. “She is Greeley through and through. She has always had the organization and community’s’ best interest at heart in everything she did. She has been a trusted advisor, and I am a better city manager and person because of her. I will miss her but am confident that, because of her service, we are positioned to continue to serve the citizens of Greeley with excellence, and we will strive to do so, in part, to honor her legacy of service.”
Maria E. Gonzalez Estevez - a veteran in the HR field, with more than 20 years of organizational development, employee relations, and performance and profitability experience - will succeed McCabe.
Most recently, Gonzalez Estevez served as the human resources director for the City of Englewood overseeing all aspects of HR operations, including benefits, compensation, employee relations, training, performance coaching, labor relations, and employment law.
Gonzalez Estevez graduated from the Universidad Católica Andres Bello, Caracas, Venezuela (1995) with a Masters of Science, Philosophy, Wilmington College (2001) with a Master of Science, Human Resources Management and Master of Business Administration, and is currently attending Universidad de LA Rioja, Logroño, Spain pursuing a Masters of Science in Labor Relations, Safety, Ergonomics, and Industrial Hygiene.
“I am honored to be joining the City of Greeley,” Gonzalez Estevez said. “I was attracted to Greeley because it is on an organizational quest for excellence. Utilizing my skills and experience in an organization with this trajectory is what fuels me. I’m eager to be part of helping Greeley down the path of becoming an employer of choice.”
Gonzalez Estevez was born and raised in Venezuela with family origins in Spain. She came to the United States in 1995 to learn English and fell in love with the US. In 2005 she completed her road to citizenship. She is a single mother of a 17-year-old daughter who attends ACC majoring in Business.
Gonzalez Estevez will work with McCabe during the next several weeks to ensure a smooth transition.
