The Marcus Garvey Cultural Center, the University of Northern Colorado, City of Greeley, and Aims Community College joined forces to honor the life and legacy of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. during the 24th annual celebration.
This year’s theme is “Unity Begins With You”. The celebration includes the annual unity march (with a new route), the celebration of Dr. King’s life and legacy, a reception, and art show on Monday, Jan. 21.
This year’s march begins at 9:45 a.m. at UNC’s University Center (UC), 2101 10th Ave. The route continues down 10th Ave. and finishes at the Union Colony Civic Center (UCCC), 701 10th Ave.
The MLK Celebration at UCCC Monfort Concert Hall begins at 11 a.m. The event includes music, spoken word, a theatrical performance, and more.
The day concludes with an art exhibit and dessert reception at the Tointon Gallery in the UCCC at 12:30 p.m. “Beauty Across the African Diaspora” features diverse artifacts and art. The show opens Jan. 18 with a public reception from 5 to 7 p.m. that same day. The show remains open until Feb. 23 as a part of Greeley’s Black History Month community events.
Greeley Evans Transit buses will offer free transportation the morning and afternoon of the march — Jan. 21. Park downtown and ride the bus up to the University Center before the march, or ride the bus back to the University Center after the celebration has concluded. The #5 Route goes from the UCCC to the UC every 20 minutes.
The MLK observance includes a full week of events to create a dialogue around inclusion, equity, and access in our communities.
