Centennial Village Celebrates its 40th Anniversary
Just over one-hundred years after Greeley’s founding, residents began acquiring local buildings and structures to create an open air museum. Its focus was to tell the historic tales of determination and bravery displayed by Northern Colorado’s early pioneers. The museum, named Centennial Village, opened during Colorado’s centennial and the nation’s bicentennial in 1976.
This year marks Centennial Village’s 40th anniversary.
Step back in time and celebrate the museum’s anniversary during Centennial Celebration. The event takes place Saturday, May 28, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday, May 29, from noon until 5 p.m. Admission is $8 per adult, $6 per senior, and $5 per child ages 3 and up, or visitors can take advantage of the museum’s special family rate of $18 for a group of five.
During Centennial Celebration, learn about each of the homes, their original location and when they were moved to Centennial Village. There will be various demonstrations including blacksmithing, timber cutting, and extended tours throughout the weekend. The event also features Buffalo Soldier demonstrations on Saturday.
Visitors can also learn about “Rattlesnake” Kate Slaughterback, visit the Monfort family home and see Weld County’s original courthouse and more. Children delight in the heritage farm animals kept in the Old Centennial Barn while parents enjoy seeing print demonstration at the High Plains Post. In addition, Centennial Village includes a 1910 Union Pacific train depot, a one-room school house, a replica of a fire station complete with an antique fire truck, village square, homes furnished with antiques galore, lush gardens, winding pathways, and lots more.
Centennial Village preserves life in the Colorado high plains region from the last 150 years. The museum is open seasonally, from May until September, with several special events planned throughout the year.
