The City of Greeley’s Human Relations Commission Pilots Community-Based Training Programs with the U.S. Department of Justice

Human-Relations-Commission

The City of Greeley’s Human Relations Commission (HRC) will host two community-centric programs facilitated by the United States Department of Justice (USDOJ) Community Relations Service (CRS), focused on engaging and building relationships with Muslim and Sikh Americans. Both trainings take place virtually via WebEx.

The “Engaging and Building Relationships with Muslim Americans” program is scheduled for 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, March 10, 2022, and the “Engaging and Building Relationships with Sikh Americans” is scheduled for 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, March 24.

Participants can register by visiting the City of Greeley’s Human Relations Commission webpage at greeleygov.com/government/b-c/boards-and-commissions/human-relations-commission or by accessing the links below:

Each program is limited to the first 50 registrants. If the classes fill up, join the waitlist by contacting Luis Aguilar at Luis.Aguilar@usdoj.gov.

Building Bridges in Communities

Conducted virtually, the interactive, two-hour trainings focus on increasing community members’ knowledge and understanding of Muslim and Sikh Americans, exploring each religion’s faith and practices; providing tips for engaging with Muslims and Sikhs; and shedding light on civil-rights related issues members of each religion face.

The City of Greeley Joins Pilot Program for DOJ Initiative

After 9/11, CRS worked with Muslim and Sikh subject matter experts to develop trainings for law enforcement to improve engagement between officials and members of the two communities. Seeing an opportunity for a wider audience, CRS developed a community-centric version of the training, which the City of Greeley’s HRC joins in launching.

"We are thrilled to pilot the community-centric training of the Department of Justice initiative," said Roger Muller, Chairperson of the HRC. "The Department of Justice reached out to Greeley’s Human Relations Commission and provided us an opportunity to build bridges within the populations of our city. It is imperative that we educate ourselves on topics in which we may be unfamiliar so that we are able to build relationships, understand, and empathize with our neighbors."

The purpose of the City of Greeley’s Human Relations Commission is to foster mutual respect and understanding among all members of the Greeley community. This commission sponsors events and creates an atmosphere conducive to community dialogue and appreciation. It provides a venue where residents can suggest policy changes to Greeley City Council regarding social issues for the benefit of the whole community.
