Drug Take-Back Day on October 26
Participate in Drug Take-Back Day this year Saturday, October 26 and safely dispose of unused and expired medications from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Greeley and Evans have three drop-off locations:
- Greeley Police Headquarters, 2875 10th St., Greeley
- University Center, 2101 10th Avenue, Greeley
- Sam’s Club parking lot, 3247 23rd Avenue, Evans
Drop off any unwanted prescriptions or over the counter medications. These locations will not accept needles or sharps, mercury, oxygen containers, chemotherapy/radioactive substances, pressurized canisters, or illegal drugs.
Studies show a majority of abused prescription drugs come from family and friends, and the home medicine cabinet. From 1999 to 2017, more than 702,000 people have died from a drug overdose. In 2017, more than 70,000 people died from drug overdoses, making it a leading cause of injury-related death in the United States. Of those deaths, almost 68 percent involved a prescription or illicit opioid according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Disposing of medications by flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash can pose environmental and health hazards. When drugs are flushed down the toilet, they are introduced into the water system.
Drug Take-Back Day offers opportunities to remove more than just unwanted drugs from the home. Weld County Household Hazardous Waste (1311 N. 17th Avenue) is open on Saturdays and Tuesdays from 8 to 5 p.m. The Sam’s Club location in Evans will feature household paper shredding, courtesy of Express Shredding Solutions.
