East 8th Street Closes for Roadwork
Thursday, April 23, East 8th Street east of U.S. 85 will close for the first of two phases to allow crews to repave the major east-west corridor road.
Phase one of the overlay program will close East 8th Street between Fern Avenue and Weld County Parkway April 23 through 30. Then, phase two will close East 8th Street between Ash and Fern avenues from April 30 through May 14.
Traffic control signs will direct drivers to detours during construction. In phase one, detours will take drivers along 18th and 16th streets to Ash Avenue. When construction moves west to phase two, detours will direct drivers to use either 16th or C streets to avoid the construction closures.
Although each phase of work will completely close its section of East 8th Street, local and business access will remain available with on-site flaggers coordinating access to maintain safety. Speed limits along the construction corridor will be temporarily reduced, and monitored, to provide a safe work site for construction crews and drivers alike.
Greeley’s pavement overlay program constructs a new surface for existing streets that have deteriorated past repair by essentially replacing the road. To do that, a mill first removes the top layer of old asphalt and then crews prepare the road for the new surface. Then paving crews install the new layer of asphalt followed by the striping crews who come through to paint traffic lines on the newly paved road.
