Greeley Receives $3.5 Million in Funding for Five New Regional Buses: U.S. Department of Transportation will fund buses for service between Greeley and Loveland

GREELEY, Colo. — The City of Greeley will receive $3,508,404 from the Federal Transit Administration to buy five compressed natural gas (CNG) buses for use on a new bus route between Greeley and Loveland. Funding for the transit investment comes from President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.

The new buses will be used to facilitate limited-stop, regional service between Greeley and Loveland. Key stops along the U.S. 34 route will include connections to the University of Northern Colorado, the I-25 mobility hub at Centerra, as well as the City of Greeley’s future Mobility Expansion for Regional Growth and Equity (MERGE) mobility hub. This service, with the support of a Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality Improvement (CMAQ) grant, is slated to start in 2026.

The city was recently awarded $20.5 million in federal grants to support the MERGE project. A proposal for additional funding is slated to go in front of voters this fall that would allow Greeley to take advantage of low-interest, long-term, federal financing without increasing or creating new taxes.

“Today, 117 communities, including Greeley, are receiving the good news that their transit buses are being modernized and their commutes improved through President Biden's Bipartisan Infrastructure Law,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg. “The Biden-Harris Administration is helping agencies across 47 states replace old buses running on dirty, expensive fuels by delivering modern and zero-emission buses, manufactured by American workers, that will connect more people to where they need to go.”

Greeley Mayor John Gates said, “Thanks to the USDOT for awarding $3.5 million in Low and No Emission Grant Program funding for Greeley-Evans Transit to acquire five new CNG buses to begin premium transit service from Greeley to Loveland. This will improve traffic safety and mobility in our fast-growing communities and North Front Range Region. These funds will reduce congestion and deliver improvements to regional air quality and equity goals. This funding will bring needed improvements to regional connectivity along U.S. Highway 34. We appreciate the continued support of our federal, state and local elected officials in securing important funds like these for the benefit of our residents.”
