Due to COVID precautions, the annual Martin Luther King, Jr. (MLK) event will take place 9 to 10:15 a.m., Jan. 18, 2021, virtually through Zoom. Registration is required. That and more information can be found at unco.edu/marcus-garvey-cultural-center/mlk-celebration.aspx. Anyone who registers can listen via phone.
As event sponsors, University of Northern Colorado (UNC), Aims Community College, Greeley-Evans School District 6, High Plains Library District and the City of Greeley’s Human Relations Commission (HRC) have planned additional events including a virtual march outside in your neighborhood. Participants are asked to tag themselves on social media to create this virtual march and post online at #MLKGreeley2021. Participants at the virtual march are encouraged to wear the event t-shirt. Limited event t-shirts are available for purchase. Event t-shirt sales end Dec. 21.
Community members who choose to buy shirts and buttons can pick up their items Jan. 12 through 15 at one of several locations. Students from UNC, Aims and Greeley-Evans School District 6 can get a free t-shirt while supplies last. To reserve your t-shirt, please visit BIT.LY/MLK-2021.
The Jan. 18 program includes performances by UNC Performing and Visual Arts students, UNC’s performing group Operation Cheesecake, poet and activist Saida Dahir, and a cooking demonstration by soul food chef DeAndre Smith and the virtual march. Free pre-event activities include a virtual discussion event “At the Table with Dr. King,” 3:15 to 4:00 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 14 and a drive-in movie showing of “Selma”, at dusk, Saturday, Jan. 16 at Aims Community College, Cornerstone building parking lot, 5401 20th St. Rd., Greeley, weather permitting.
