Greeley's water quality team asks Greeley residents living in houses built before 1981 to fill out a questionnaire about their water service line. Participants can win one of three $100 gift cards to be given away monthly between July and November.

Customers provide information and photos of where the water service line enters the house. A water service line is an underground pipe carrying water from the public water main in the street into a home or building.

The city uses this information to determine if the service line is lead. That way, the city avoids digging small holes at the properties to inspect the line visually. This process is called "potholing" and can be costly and disruptive to landscaping.

It’s important to know that Greeley’s water is lead-free when it leaves the city’s treatment plants. However, lead particles can be released when water travels through pipes and plumbing fixtures that contain lead.  

“Identifying and removing all remaining lead service lines is the next step to ensure safe, reliable, and great-tasting water,” said Water and Sewer Utilities Director Sean Chambers. “Our water quality team is focused on safety, regulatory compliance, and providing an excellent customer experience.”

The city’s certified water distribution crews proactively replaced many lead service lines in the 1990s. The work to identify, document, and replace any remaining lead service lines owned by customers ensures compliance with an evolving Environmental Protection Agency regulation known as the Lead and Copper Rule.
