History, Trees and Cowboys: Free June Events in Greeley

A group of people listen to a person talk about a variety of trees in the background.

GREELEY, Colo. — The Greeley Historic Preservation Commission invites the public to enjoy three free events in June to kick off the summer.

Popular Walking Tours Begin in June

On June 9, City Forestry Manager Shiloh Hatcher will lead a walking tour about trees on the University of Northern Colorado campus. "Cool Trees, Hot Tree Topics" will begin at 6 p.m. on the west side of Gunter Hall, 10th Avenue and Cranford Place. Attendees should wear comfortable shoes and bring a water bottle.

The History Hour Series Continues

Josh Ingram, a Metro State University history student, will give a talk on Thursday, June 12, at noon. The event will be held at the Greeley History Museum, 714 8th Street. His presentation, "Weapons and Wagers: The Arms Race of the Cold War," will look at how the U.S. and the Soviet Union competed to build powerful weapons. He'll also explain how this race affected people's lives and helped lead to the fall of the Soviet Union.

To help kick off the Greeley Stampede, Daniel Geary of Lone Tree Antique and Fine Art will give a History Hour talk on June 26 at noon at the Greeley History Museum. Geary will share the 400-year story of the cowboy and how cowboys helped grow the cattle industry in North America. His story begins in 1520, when  Spanish conquistador Cortés brought horses and cows to the continent, and ends in the early 1900s.

These events are free and open to the public. Reservations are not required.
