Monday, June 21, just ahead of Bike to Work Day, City of Greeley natural areas & trails and water and sewer officials will reopen the Poudre Trail adjacent to Poudre Ponds between 25th Avenue and 35th Avenue.
“A portion of the Poudre Trail between 25th Avenue and 35th Avenue, has been closed since fall,” said Justin Scharton, natural areas and trails superintendent with the city’s Culture, Parks and Recreation Department. “With the Poudre Ponds project underway, we wanted to ensure the public would be safe during construction. The project has progressed enough to reopen the trail. However, work still continues on the water and sewer project and we anticipate that the Poudre Ponds won’t be ready to reopen for fishing until later this fall at the earliest.”
Natural Areas & Trails officials plan to open the Poudre Trail in time for Bike to Work Day to promote a safe option for residents bicycling to work. The Poudre Trail is a wonderful place to experience nature, wildlife, and the great outdoors, as well as the freedom that bicycling provides.
Bike to Work Day is an annual event, part of Colorado Bike Month, which is held in June to celebrate bicycling as an alternative form of transportation. Bike to Work Day gives the community an opportunity to explore the Poudre Trail more in depth and enjoy other aspects like birdwatching, land navigation, and studying geolocation activities such as geocaching.
This year’s Bike to Work (or Wherever) event will look a little different than in past years, but community members still have a way to get their a 2021 Greeley Bike to Work Day T-shirt.
Any community member who wants to can bike to work (or wherever) grab a photo of themselves with their bike, or a photo of their bike ride – maybe on the beautiful Poudre Trail - and share it in the Greeley Bike To Work (Or Wherever) Day Event on Facebook. Then stop by the Greeley Recreation Center or Family FunPlex between June 23 and July 2 to pick up their shirt.
