The Greeley Fire Department will commemorate its 150^th anniversary with a community event from 2-4 p.m. Friday, Nov. 5.

 The department invites the public to attend the celebration at Fire Station No. 1, 1155 10th Ave. Fire department artifacts, historical photos, and trucks in use today will be on display. Participants also will have the chance to tour portions of the station. Fire Chief Brian Kuznik, as well as members of the department’s command staff and honor guard, will lead a short ceremony starting at 2 p.m. The celebration also will be livestreamed on the department’s Facebook page, https://www.facebook.com/gfdcolorado. 

 “We’re observing a significant milestone in celebrating 150 years of continuous service to the community,” Kuznik said. “This is not only a time to recognize Greeley Fire Department staff, past and present, for their dedicated service and commitment to protecting our city but also to express our appreciation to the community for the support in helping transform the department into the progressive, all-hazards response organization that it is today.”

 The origins of the Greeley Fire Department date back to Nov. 6, 1871, when the city adopted an ordinance creating a fire department in response to “The Great Chicago Fire” that ravaged the Windy City a month earlier. Since then, the department has evolved from a single fire station with a volunteer-based staff to a professional staff of 133 serving over 110,000 residents 24 hours a day at seven fire stations throughout the city.
