Water Main Replacement Requires Temporary Closure of 47th Avenue and 20th Street Intersection
In order to replace a leaking water main, the intersection of 47th Avenue and 20th Street must close for about five days during spring break.
For those five days, March 14-18, no traffic can go through that intersection in any direction. Following the initial closure, a second closure will stop drivers from going west at the intersection for about five weeks.
To minimize disruption to normal, everyday traffic, city officials timed the closure for March 14-18 to line up with spring break for local schools and the nearby college. Fully closing the intersection allows crews to get the work done faster and in a safer environment for construction workers and community members as well.
During the closure, signs will direct drivers to detours on 59th and 35th avenues and 10th Street and U.S. 34 Bypass. Electronic message boards will also share up-to-date information about construction for residents and drivers throughout the area.
The initial, full closure is scheduled for five days. Further construction will continue on the northwest side of the intersection until April 8. During that second, smaller closure, only drivers needing to go west on 20th Street from 47th Avenue will need to use the marked detours. Drivers should use 10th Street or U.S. 34 Bypass for westbound travel during that time.
Officials ask drivers to refrain from using area neighborhoods or business parking lots as shortcuts around the detours.
