7 Ways to Lower Your Bills by Using Less Hot Water

HotWaterDid you know that saving water can reduce energy costs? Your water heater accounts for 11% of your energy bill. It’s the second-largest energy user in the house after your room heating system. And you’re paying twice for hot water: once for the water and once for heating the water.

Here are 7 great tips to help you save hot water:

  1. Turn down the temperature on the water heater to 120° F or less. You’ll save money and prevent scalding accidents.

  2. Only run full loads in the dishwasher and washing machine.

  3. Don’t be afraid of new low-flow showerheads. They maintain high water pressure and have improved over the years. Choose a WaterSense labeled model that uses 2 gallons or less per minute.  Greeley offers showerhead exchanges a few times per year, check the event calendar for dates, times and locations.

  4. Save by reducing your shower time by a minute or two. You can also save water by turning off the shower when soaping up and then turn it back on to rinse off.

  5. Fix leaky faucets, a hot water leak wastes both water and energy. Tightly turn off faucets to stop unnecessary drips.

  6. Sink with AeratorAdd aerators to all household sinks. They increase water pressure and help you use less water.  Purchase one that uses 1 gallon per minute or less. Or sign up for an indoor audit to get free ones.

  7. Insulate! Adding installation for your water heater, it reduces heat loss and saves money. Water pipe installation allows for even lower water temperature settings. Focus on pipes within 3 feet of the tank.
