Beware of Sewer Cleaning Scams

Dealing with a clogged sewer drains and sewage backups are problems that nobody wants.  If you are unfortunately plagued with this issue, you may be inclined just to pay money to have someone else to take care of it.

What is then even worse is that then you may be hit with the news that you need a brand new sewer line. Companies can get a video camera to show that “your” line needs replacement as it is cracked or tree roots that have broken inside it.  Some unethical companies may show you a video of bad pipes that may not be yours.

Before you spend thousands of dollars on repairs, please check with the Greeley Water & Sewer Wastewater Collection Division at 970-350-9332.  The City keeps records of sewer cleaning and inspection.

Also, check with the Better Business Bureau, before doing business with any company.

Here are a few tips to prevent sewer clogs from keeping your pipes and the City’s system as problem-free as possible:

  • Fats, oils, and grease in sewer pipes cause sewer maintenance problems for property owners and the city. Never pour grease down your sink drain and try to use your garbage disposal less often.

  • Keep out hazardous waste and poisons out of your plumbing system, such as automotive fluids paint, solvents, sealants, and thinners. Items like batteries, solvents, paints, pesticides and more can be dropped off at the Weld County Household Hazardous Waste Site at 1311 N. 17th Avenue. The site is open every Tuesday and Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

  • It's a toilet, not a trashcan. The only thing you should ever flush down a toilet is human waste (urine and feces) and toilet paper. Here is a list of some of the things to keep out of the toilet:
    • cleaning wipes of any kind, even if it claims to be "flushable"
    • facial tissue
    • disposable diapers
    • feminine hygiene products
    • cotton balls and swabs
    • condoms
    • bandages and bandage wrappings
    • cigarette butts
    • pharmaceuticals (Greeley offers Drug Take Back Day in April & October )
    • personal care products of any kind
