On Saturday, July 20 the Greeley Art Commission and Greeley Museums will be holding a 1% for Art Centennial Village Art Fence ribbon cutting and commemoration of the Monfort House renovation and exhibit beginning at 10 am. Festivities will be followed by refreshments and free entrance for the attendees into Centennial Village to view the new Monfort exhibit and house renovations.
Artist Lisa Cameron Russell has created an additional 600 feet to the existing art fence titled, “Go West” to continue the story of Greeley’s water history. The portion of the fence surrounding the Monfort house, a part of Greeley’s living history museum, displays a glimpse of Monfort family history on painted fence panels. Historic images were taken from early photos and brought to life with Cameron’s colorful, energetic painting style. This project was made possible by One Percent Water Funds, and is a culmination of efforts by the Greeley Art Commission, Culture and Public Art, the Greeley Museums, Island Grove, the Monfort Family and artist Lisa Cameron Russell.
The exterior of the Monfort House has been renovated by returning it to its original white clapboard siding, highlighted with dark shutters, repairing the roof, revamping the main floor public spaces – including a public restroom, and beautifying the grounds with both native and hybrid perennials – now entirely encircled by the Go West Art Fence.
Nuzzled on the Monfort House’s main floor is the exhibit, Cattle Trails and Tales, which explores the innovative, savvy and often lucky historical figures who “corralled” the local cattle industry. From Charles Goodnight and Oliver Loving to Warren and Ken Monfort, the tales of these cattlemen who have been at the heart of our western heritage are put on display. Extraordinary images and artifacts are also on show, from John Iliff, W.D. Farr, Lord Ogilvy and “Neighbor” Witwer and the SLW Ranch. Added this year are historic images from Monfort of Colorado plus historic image overlays on exhibit space windows.
Centennial Village is located at 1475 A St. at Island Grove Park. For more information about the dedication and the Greeley Museums call 970-350-9220.
