Exciting Plans Shape the Future of Greeley’s Arroyos del Sol Natural Area

Conservation Easement Protects Space from Future Development

GREELEY, Colo. — On February 28, 2025, Greeley closed on the Arroyos del Sol property and protected it with a conservation easement. This nearly 1,000-acre space is now safe for wildlife and outdoor activities. Trust for Public Land (TPL) bought the property in 2022, with support from Greeley and Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO), to protect it from development. Colorado Open Lands will hold the conservation easement in perpetuity.

Greeley’s Natural Areas & Trails Division is excited to share the site plan for the Arroyos del Sol Natural Area.

Guided by the Community

Mundus Bishop, a landscape architecture firm, created the plan using surveys, tours and focus groups. This feedback helped them balance recreation and conservation. Experts in wildlife, natural resources, and trail design also helped refine the vision.

Key Features of the Plan

  • Trails for All: Enjoy scenic bluffs and prairies on multi-use trails.  Tackle challenging mountain biking paths designed for every skill level.

  • Hilltop Hub: A central gathering space with picnic spots and play areas.

  • Wildlife Protection: Special zones protect habitats for over 91 animals and one rare plant species. These zones keep them safe while visitors enjoy the beauty of the prairie.

  • Inclusive Adventures: Accessible paths, bike skill courses, and interpretive signage make it easy for everyone to enjoy nature.

Why It Matters

“We envision this space as a regional destination that celebrates our city's natural beauty while boosting tourism,” said Diana Frick, Director of Culture, Parks, and Recreation.

“Connecting everyone to the outdoors is core to TPL’s mission and Arroyos del Sol will effectively double the amount of natural area available to the over 100,000 residents of Greeley,” said Wade Shelton, senior project manager for Trust for Public Land.

Funding and Expertise

This project is made possible by TPL, Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO), and input from experts like the International Mountain Biking Association (IMBA) and Colorado Natural Heritage Program.

Greeley partnered with TPL to acquire the land using funding from GOCO, the Land and Water Conservation Fund, Ducks Unlimited, and contributions from Windsor.

What’s Next?

Upgrades will happen in phases, starting with trails, parking, shade pavilions and restrooms. Future projects will expand these amenities while prioritizing conservation. Residents can stay involved through volunteer events and project updates on Speak Up Greeley

The area is currently closed for winter to protect wildlife and muddy trails. Depending on the weather, it will reopen in late March or April. Check COTREX for trail conditions.
