The City of Greeley starting building new pickleball courts earlier this year at Sherwood Park, 2820 13th St. The initial stage of construction wrapped up, however, the site cannot open for public use until late spring 2021.  

A concrete slab has replaced the old asphalt tennis courts that will become eight individual pickleball courts. Construction crews must wait for consistently warmer weather before the final topcoat can be applied to complete the project. In addition, surfacing of the courts requires 28 days to cure.

Brian Ward, a civil engineer with the city of Greeley, said, "we don't want residents to see a pickleball court almost finished and wonder why they can't use it. We're estimating that the courts cannot be open until May."

Pickleball is a paddleball sport that combines badminton, table tennis, and tennis and is gaining popularity within the community. For many years, residents requested that Greeley's Culture, Parks and Recreation Department build outdoor pickleball courts.

The tennis courts at Sherwood Park were in disrepair and unusable for tennis in any competitive form. Multiple public tennis courts are available in Greeley, including at Centennial Park and Greeley Central High School.
