GREELEY, Colo. — On January 11, Governor Jared Polis verbally issued a disaster declaration related to a winter storm forecasted to hit Colorado over the weekend. While minimal snow is expected in Greeley, the National Weather Service predicts temperatures will drop below zero between Saturday and Tuesday morning.

City of Greeley Preparations

The City of Greeley’s Office of Emergency Management is monitoring the storm. City snow plows are ready, and emergency services like fire and police will operate as usual. There are additional crews on standby as the storm warrants. All gas and electric utility providers have increased system monitoring and on-call staff for potential responses in Greeley.

There are two overnight shelters open and ready to receive guests in Greeley. Adults (18 and older) can seek shelter at the United Way Cold Weather Shelter, 870 28th Street. Families are welcome at the Guadalupe Center, a warming shelter located at 1442 N 11th Avenue. The Salvation Army, 1119 6th Street, will be open for walk-ins between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. for daytime warming and feeding.

The City of Greeley’s Homeless and Housing Solutions team is working with emergency responders and other community partners to ensure anyone who wants and needs shelter has access to one. Additional shelter services and transportation assistance will be activated if necessary.

Storm Safety Tips: How to Prepare for Bitter Cold

Protect yourself and your home from dangerous winter weather and bitter cold:

  • Avoid unnecessary travel and outdoor activities. If you do need to go outside, dress in layers and prepare your vehicle with an emergency kit and supplies.
  • Bring pets inside and move outdoor animals like livestock to sheltered areas.
  • Heat your home safely. Never use an oven or a gas stovetop to heat your home.
  • Minimize the risk of frozen pipes: Leave faucets running at a trickle, leave cabinet doors open, and close all doors and windows to keep heat inside.

The City of Greeley’s top priority during the storm is the safety of our residents. In an emergency, dial 911 for help.
