Volunteer Opportunities for Tree Planting Project at Mountain Vista Natural Area

The City of Greeley has received a $6,000 grant from the Colorado Tree Coalition and the Xcel Energy Foundation and is seeking volunteers to help plant 45 trees for the Mountain Vista Natural Area/Sheep Draw Trail Development Project on Saturday, May 4, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., rain or shine.

A light lunch will be provided for volunteers; however, volunteers must pre-register for the project ahead of time by signing up online at greeleygov.com/plant.  Volunteers not pre-registered cannot be guaranteed a lunch.  Volunteers should dress for the weather with durable shoes or boots and bring their own gloves.  Sunscreen, water and all necessary tools will be provided.

The Mountain Vista Natural Area is a 22-acre site located in southwest Greeley in the Mountain Vista subdivision.  In 2019, the City of Greeley began construction of a paved trail through the area to connect two existing trails, the regional Sheep Draw Trail to the north and the Owl Ridge Trail to the south.  The project includes construction of a trailhead parking lot adjacent to 20th Street.

The Colorado Tree Coalition awarded $49,698 to 21 organizations in 2018.  Along with matching funds provided by the grant recipients, this helped plant 1,309 trees in communities across Colorado. Each of these projects allowed residents the opportunity to make a difference in their community with a combined total of 2,725 hours of volunteer service.  These grants were made possible through the support of the USDA Forest Service, the Colorado State Forest Service, Xcel Energy Foundation, Xcel Energy Vegetation Management, and the members and supporters of the Colorado Tree Coalition. Since 1991, the Colorado Tree Coalition has awarded 533 grants totaling over $927,698. These grants have been matched with over $8 million in community money and/or time.  As a result of these grants 76,478 trees have been planted throughout the state.
