University of Northern Colorado Women’s Basketball: Big Sky Conference Champs
Kudos and congrats to the University of Northern Colorado women’s basketball coaches and players who clinched the program’s first outright Big Sky Conference regular season title on their home turf at Bank of Colorado Arena in front of 1,300 fans. Congratulations and good luck in the upcoming tournament!
UNC Women’s Basketball player Savannah Smith was named the Big Sky Conference Most Valuable Player. She was also named to the All-Big Sky First Team. Her teammate Kianna Williams was named Big Sky Defensive Player of the Year and Savannah Scott was named All-Big Sky second team for the second year in a row.
And, not to be outdone by her players, Northern Colorado’s Women’s Basketball coach Kamie Ethridge earned her first, and hopefully not last, Big Sky Conference Coach of the Year honor. Congratulations Coach!
Big Sky Conference: Andre Spight Supports UNC Success
Northern Colorado senior Andre Spight was recognized as the Big Sky Newcomer of the Year and was selected for the Big Sky First Team. He is also one of three conference players to be voted on the first team unanimously. And he was named the Big Sky Conference Ready Nutrition Player of the Week. Dre helped his team to an outstanding overall 22-12 winning season, plus wins in the Big Sky Tournament and the CIT College Insider Tournament.
Northern Colorado Men’s Basketball Wins Post-Season Tournament
UNC was the final team in Colorado to play this season and it was for a title. UNC now has to find a spot to hang a championship banner in Bank of Colorado Arena as they hold on to beat Illinois-Chicago 76-71 in the Collegeinsider.com Tournament to secure their place in history with the title and the most wins in program history.
University of Northern Colorado - Club Division II National Championships
Way to Go Bears! The UNC Club Hockey team won the Big Mountain Conference Championship and qualified for their first Club Division II National Championships. This is their first championship since moving up from Division-III, three years ago.
U.S. Census Bureau - Fastest-Growing Metro Area in Colorado
We all know that the population in Greeley and the surrounding area is growing. The US Census Bureau agrees and has the stats to back it up. Greeley has been named Colorado’s fastest-growing metro area and the third fastest-growing metro area in the country based on mid-year 2017 population estimates.
USA Today ‘For the Win’ - WeldWerks Brewing Named Champs
Another win for Greeley’s very own WeldWerks Brewing Company. They emerged as champions of USA Today’s ‘For the Win’ craft beer bracket challenge that was held during college basketball’s March Madness.

Greeley Central Senior: DECA Leadership Conference
Greeley Central just returned from the DECA State Leadership Conference. Senior Hunter Miller qualified for the International Career Development Conference to be held in April. Hunter is the first student in Greeley to qualify for ICDC since 2011. DECA prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs in marketing, finance, hospitality and management in high schools and colleges around the globe.
Greeley Central High School - Boettcher Foundation Scholarship
Congratulations to Greeley Central student Hannah Kiburz for earning a Boettcher Foundation Scholarship. The Boettcher Scholarship supports Colorado’s high-potential graduating seniors by providing them with a full-ride scholarship to attend a Colorado college or university.
Colorado State Wrestling Champion: Class 4A Wrestler of the Year
Congratulations to Greeley Central wrestler Andrew Alirez for earning his third Class 4A State Wrestling Championship. Andrew was also named 4A Wrestler of the Year and earned a spot on the first team all-state. Way to go, Andrew!
Aims Community College - Paragon Awards
Aims Community College staff won six Paragon awards at the most recent National Council for the Marketing and Public Relations conference. Paragon Awards recognize excellence in design and communication in two-year community and technical colleges. Awards included: Gold for their website, Gold for the Aims 50th Anniversary micro site, Silver for their "Eclipse Viewing Party“ poster; Silver for their 50th Anniversary T-Shirt; another Silver for their work on the Aims 50th Anniversary campaign, and a Bronze for their original photography, "Ascending Into a New Era."
Aims Community College: Space Foundation Teacher Liaison
Aims Community College and Colorado Early College instructor Eli Sadeh was recently added to the Space Foundation International Teacher Liaison Program. He was among 30 other educators, including five in India and one in Nigeria. The Liaisons are advocates for space-themed education, using training and resources provided by the Space Foundation to incorporate space principles into classrooms.
District 6 Superintendent 2018 Outstanding Charter School Authorizer
The Colorado League of Charter Schools presented Greeley-Evans School District 6 Superintendent Dr. Deirdre Pilch with the 2018 Outstanding Charter School Authorizer Award. Dr. Pilch was selected for this recognition from among the 51 organizations that authorize charter schools, as well as Colorado’s 250 public charter schools.
Greeley-Evans School District 6 - Certificate of Achievement
The Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting has been awarded to Greeley-Evans School District 6 by the Government Finance Officers Association of the US and Canada for the district’s comprehensive annual financial report. This is the highest form of recognition in the area of governmental accounting and financial reporting.
UNC Nursing: 4th Best in the State
The School of Nursing at the University of Northern Colorado recently earned a top ranking by registerednursing.org. They named the program the 4th best among all of Colorado’s post-secondary schools.
Tom Norton: Weld County Distinguished Citizen Award
Former Greeley mayor Tom Norton joined a long list of notable Weld County residents when he received this year’s Weld County Distinguished Citizen "Sonny Mapelli" Award, from the Longs Peak Council, Boy Scouts of America. The award is given each year to a person who embodies the spirit of scouting and who has put it upon themselves to improve the community. The Longs Peak Council serves young men and women in northern Colorado, southern Wyoming and western Nebraska.
Greeley Police Department – National Police Canine Association Award
Congratulations to Greeley Police Officer John McNerney and K9 partner, Cairo, for receiving two awards from the National Police Canine Association – one recognizing the team for finding drugs and another for general police work. John and Cairo earned both awards for calls they handled in a single night, a rare occurrence among cities with K9 units.
Greeley Police Department: 2019 World Games Torch Run
Sergeant Daniel Frazen has been selected by Special Olympics Colorado to represent all Colorado law enforcement agencies at the 2019 World Games next March in Abu Dhabi. Dan will be running with law enforcement officers from around the world in a Law Enforcement Torch Run carrying the Torch for 2 weeks across the United Arab Emirates.
Commercial Driver of the Year Award
Greeley’s Martin Hamilton, a driver for MHC Kenworth, has been recognized as their national driver of the year by Lytx DriveCam’s safe driving program. Martin drives about 65,000 miles per year for his job.
UNC Associate Professor “Jeopardy!” Contestant
Congratulations to University of Northern Colorado associate professor of Journalism and Media Studies Lynn Klyde-Allaman for being chosen as a contestant on “Jeopardy!” Lynn was picked out of more than 50,000 people who are screened and tested annually. Lynn won one game and competed in a second round.
