Water Conservation

The City of Greeley is proud to have a long history of water stewardship here in northern Colorado. Since 1907, we’ve provided safe, high-quality water supplies for our residents while ensuring a reliable supply for the future. One of the many ways we’re safeguarding your water supply is through water conservation. In fact, Greeley offers one of the most robust water conservation programs in Colorado.

With just over 13 inches of rainfall per year, Greeley is considered a semi-arid climate. This means local water supplies are scarce and must be used very wisely. To help customers save water indoors as well as outdoors, Greeley provides a wide range of water conservation programs and services that benefit a variety of water users.

Water Efficiency Plan

The City of Greeley’s Water Efficiency Plan is a roadmap of strategic objectives and water conservation programs to ensure future water supplies. The Water Efficiency Plan was approved by the Water and Sewer Board, Planning Commission and City Council in 2022. The main objectives of the plan are to maximize widespread efficiency in all indoor water use, set goals for more resilient landscapes, and educate customers on water use goals. It will provide direction on how to advance water conservation efforts and build citywide capacity to:

  • Create efficiencies and consistencies among policies, plans, projects, and programs
  • Maximize cost-saving opportunities
  • Create goals with clear measurements for success

In 2018, the Greeley Police Department collected 668 pounds of prescription and over the counter drugs at its spring and fall Drug Take-Back Day events. Participate in Drug Take-Back Day this year on Saturday, April 27. Safely dispose of unused and expired medications from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.

There are three drop-off locations in Greeley and Evans:

  • Greeley Police Headquarters, 2875 10th Street, Greeley
  • University Center, 2101 10th Avenue, Greeley
  • Sam’s Club parking lot, 3247 23rd Avenue, Evans

Drop off any unwanted prescriptions or over the counter medications.  These locations will not accept needles or sharps, mercury, oxygen containers, chemotherapy/radioactive substances, pressurized canisters or illegal drugs.

Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs come from family and friends, and the home medicine cabinet. In 2016, there were more than 63,000 deadly drug overdoses in the nation, according to the latest numbers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.  Also, overdose deaths involving prescription opioids were five times higher in 2016 than in 1999.

Disposing of medications by flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash can pose environmental and health hazards. When drugs are flushed down the toilet, they are introduced into the water system.

This day offers opportunities to remove more than just unwanted drugs from your home. The Weld County Household Hazardous Waste site (1311 N. 17th Avenue) is open on Saturdays and Tuesdays from 8 to 5 p.m. and Spring Clean-up Weekend takes place April 26 and 27 in Greeley to get rid of yard waste and other debris.

Check the City of Greeley website at greeleygov.com for more details or contact Greeley Police Neighborhood Action Team officer, Arpad Bality, at 970-351-5361 for more information.
