Water Conservation

The City of Greeley is proud to have a long history of water stewardship here in northern Colorado. Since 1907, we’ve provided safe, high-quality water supplies for our residents while ensuring a reliable supply for the future. One of the many ways we’re safeguarding your water supply is through water conservation. In fact, Greeley offers one of the most robust water conservation programs in Colorado.

With just over 13 inches of rainfall per year, Greeley is considered a semi-arid climate. This means local water supplies are scarce and must be used very wisely. To help customers save water indoors as well as outdoors, Greeley provides a wide range of water conservation programs and services that benefit a variety of water users.

Water Efficiency Plan

The City of Greeley’s Water Efficiency Plan is a roadmap of strategic objectives and water conservation programs to ensure future water supplies. The Water Efficiency Plan was approved by the Water and Sewer Board, Planning Commission and City Council in 2022. The main objectives of the plan are to maximize widespread efficiency in all indoor water use, set goals for more resilient landscapes, and educate customers on water use goals. It will provide direction on how to advance water conservation efforts and build citywide capacity to:

  • Create efficiencies and consistencies among policies, plans, projects, and programs
  • Maximize cost-saving opportunities
  • Create goals with clear measurements for success

Greeley’s Landscape Lecture series will move to an online-only format via a Zoom webinar through June. City of Greeley officials have monitored the rapidly evolving COVID-19 situation, and the health and safety of the community are paramount. Presenting the lectures through an online-only format will help limit contact and exposure. The webinars are live and attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions.

The lecture series’ next event, Horticulture for Western Gardens, starts at 6:30 p.m. May 13. Annie Barrow, manager of horticulture outreach programs at Denver Botanic Gardens, will present water-wise landscaping for western regions. Her lectures focus on plant selection, planting design, and best practices. Climate and xeriscape misconceptions, barriers to low water plantings, ornamental plants for Colorado are also covered in the class. Register at, https://bit.ly/LLGreeley1. This lecture was rescheduled from March.

Join us for Become a Habitat Hero: Gardening for the Birds at 6:30 p.m. May 20. Jamie Weiss, Habitat Hero Coordinator at Audubon Rockies, leads this session. One of the biggest bird conservation threats is habitat loss. To address this, our Habitat Hero program provides people, businesses, and cities with the resources to create bird habitat in their communities. By planting bird-friendly gardens with native plants, not only are we creating more beautiful and water-efficient communities, we’re connecting people to nature. Register at, https://bit.ly/LLGreeley2.

At 6:30 p.m. on June 17, the topic is Succession Planting to Support Pollinators. Ross Shrigley, the Executive Director of Plant Select, is the presenter for this landscape lecture. A pollinator garden is an inviting place for people and wildlife and creates a positive impact on the environment. Make your yard a delightful place for bumblebees, hummingbirds, and butterflies all season long. Perennials have different bloom periods, with some blooming early in the spring and other blooming in mid- or late summer. Planting the perennials, so you have a succession of blooms keeps the garden looking fresh throughout the flowering seasons. Register at, https://bit.ly/LLGreeley3.

All webinars will be recorded and available to watch at a later date on YouTube. Please visit greeleygov.com/LandscapeLectures or call 970-350-9210 to get more information.
